How We Added Video Calls to a Unity-Powered VR Product in Just Five Hours

Gravity Sketch, a 3D design platform for immersive VR collaboration, wanted to add real-time video communications into its Unity-powered VR environment so designers and reviewers could collaborate more naturally inside the product. The challenge was to make video calling, screen sharing, and participant presence work inside a very different 3D interface while still feeling intuitive for users.

Whereby partnered with Gravity Sketch and, using its Browser SDK and lower-level SDK, helped build fully functioning video calls inside the VR product in just over five hours. The teams enabled Whereby-powered conversations in the desktop and VR environments, created a custom VR UX with floating 3D video tiles, and avoided native components or major performance issues on Quest devices.
