Uttar Pradesh Police, the law-enforcement agency for India’s most populous state, needed a faster way to coordinate across thousands of police stations and reach communities as social media use expanded even in rural areas. They partnered with WhatsApp to use its messaging platform for community policing, internal coordination, and public outreach.

With WhatsApp, UP Police created dedicated groups for all 1,465 police stations, district PROs, social media cells, and senior officers, and connected about 350,000 digital volunteers to police teams. WhatsApp also helped the department counter misinformation through a central rumor-reporting number during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, where 2,372 messages were submitted for verification, leading to quicker decision-making, better implementation of initiatives, and more effective community problem-solving.
