Instituto Boto Cinza - Customer Case Study

Instituto Boto Cinza, a Brazilian marine conservation organization founded by Dr. Leonardo Flach, works to protect Guiana dolphins along the coast of South America. Its challenge was gathering timely, reliable information about sick, injured, or dead dolphins across a wide and hard-to-monitor area, especially when many informants previously could not reach the team quickly by phone.

Using WhatsApp, Instituto Boto Cinza built a simple reporting network with fishermen, sailors, and other local experts to share sightings, photos, and videos in real time. With WhatsApp, the organization expanded its monitoring reach to nearly 100 contributors, improved the speed and quality of field intelligence, and was better able to investigate major events such as a 2018 dolphin die-off outbreak.
