CDD Acontece is a community news initiative founded by Carla Siccos in Cidade de Deus, a favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To counter the neighborhood’s negative image and the lack of fast, reliable local information, she began using WhatsApp to share good news, announcements, job vacancies, missing person reports, and other community updates.
Using WhatsApp status updates, CDD Acontece was able to quickly reach residents and promote local opportunities, events, and important public-service information. The result was a growing community operation with volunteers and an office, and Carla says around 6,000 people now see her WhatsApp updates. WhatsApp helped increase attendance for local courses and even contributed to improvements on issues like rubbish collection.
