Case Study: GEOSS achieves accurate, easy location sharing with what3words

A what3words Case Study

Preview of the GEOSS Case Study

Watching the Earth with what3words and GEOSS

what3words partnered with GEOSS (the Global Earth Observation System of Systems), a GEO platform that links some 200 million Earth-observation resources from 102 governments and 92 organizations. GEOSS relied on long numeric GPS coordinates that are difficult to transcribe and prone to errors, making it hard for policymakers, humanitarian teams and non‑GIS users to reliably request and share location-specific data.

Integrating what3words’ 3 m x 3 m three‑word addresses made location input and sharing simple and error‑resistant: addresses are easy to speak, write and memorize, and similar word combinations are placed far apart to avoid confusion. As a result, GEOSS data became more accessible and trustworthy for government bodies, NGOs, farmers and the general public, improving accurate retrieval of imagery and environmental information.
