A what3words Case Study
USAID Rwanda, which delivers over $120 million annually across 40 projects in health, agriculture, climate and governance, needed a simple, reliable way to record site locations to improve monitoring, coordination and transparency. Traditional GPS coordinates proved accurate but difficult to use and prone to transcription and communication errors in the field.
USAID piloted what3words, an app that gives every 3×3 m square a unique three‑word address, works offline and includes error detection; project staff record these addresses in spreadsheets and send them to headquarters. With a growing database of three‑word addresses and integration into ESRI ArcGIS, the initiative has made site identification faster and more accurate and strengthened project monitoring, partner coordination and aid effectiveness.
