UN-ASIGN - Customer Case Study

what3words worked with AnsuR Technologies and the United Nations to address a common problem in disaster response: reliably communicating precise locations from crowd-sourced reports. UN-ASIGN, a free UN crowd-sourcing app, collects photos and damage reports during natural disasters and humanitarian crises, but sharing exact locations quickly and unambiguously had been a persistent challenge.

The solution was to integrate what3words into UN-ASIGN so every photo and report is automatically tagged with a memorable 3‑word address. These precise, human-friendly locations are routed through UNOSAT to UNOCHA and responding agencies, improving situational awareness, reducing location errors, and speeding coordination—an approach successfully used in Haiti, Pakistan, Nigeria and Thailand.
