A what3words Case Study
[UN]cultivated is a nonprofit that preserves indigenous knowledge and supports local food systems by mapping farms, markets, community gardens and roadside vendors. They train volunteers across the US to update a database, but many contributors lack accurate street addresses and are therefore hard for locals and visitors to find.
To solve this, [UN]cultivated integrated what3words into their map and volunteer submission form so every site has a precise 3‑word address. They also prototyped “Local Foodshed Passports” listing contributors and 3‑word locations to drive visits and rewards, and—through a World Youth Congress partnership—are training young people worldwide to map local food systems so these places and their stories become easier to discover and support.
