A what3words Case Study
H2ONow is a Barcelona social-innovation startup tackling the widespread problem of dysfunctional handpumps and unsafe water access in low-resource regions—an issue that contributes to hundreds of thousands of water-related deaths each year. Their intelligent 2G-connected pumps upload daily usage and water-quality data to a cloud platform to generate localized recommendations for users and maintenance teams, but precise location sharing has been a persistent challenge: traditional latitude/longitude reporting is accurate but error-prone in the field.
To solve this, H2ONow integrated what3words so every pump is assigned a fixed, easy-to-communicate 3-word address shown in the management platform. This reduces transcription errors, speeds coordination between NGOs, governments and maintenance crews, and helps communities act on the platform’s recommendations. The system is being piloted with three international NGOs across roughly 150 devices in diverse regions from Guatemala to the Gaza Strip.
