A what3words Case Study
what3words has been adopted by Djibouti Post as the country’s national postal addressing standard to tackle chronic delivery problems caused by few named streets and limited home addressing. Until now, regular mail was largely confined to PO boxes or restricted express delivery in Djibouti City, creating high volumes of undelivered items, storage costs and poor service for residents across the 23,200 km² nation.
By assigning every 3 m x 3 m square a fixed three-word address, what3words gives Djibouti Post an easy-to-use, precise and offline-capable system (app and API) that is available in multiple languages. Implementing the system—backed by an education campaign—enables reliable nationwide home delivery, reduces undelivered mail and costs, and supports increased trade, logistics and social development across the country.
