Discover Ulaanbaatar with what3words, Unitel and Ulaanbaatar Passport

what3words partnered with Mongolian mobile operator Unitel and local publisher Ulaanbaatar Passport to help visitors explore Ulaanbaatar without feeling like obvious tourists. Unitel sold short-stay SIM cards at the airport, Sixt rental shops and hotels, bundled with a pocket-sized Ulaanbaatar Passport guide listing the city’s best cafés, bars and restaurants. The challenge was helping non‑locals navigate a confusing city and overcome language barriers so they could experience the city like locals.

The solution was to include what3words 3‑word addresses for every venue in the guide and to encourage travelers to download the what3words app using Unitel’s data. Visitors could navigate in their own language, redeem exclusive deals from listed venues, and use precise 3‑word meeting points to coordinate with friends — resulting in easier wayfinding, better local experiences, and more confident, independent exploration of Ulaanbaatar.
