Addressing Finland with what3words and the National Land Survey

The National Land Survey of Finland, which has mapped the country for more than 200 years, needed a way to make its spatial data easier for both experts and the public to use. In its Paikkatietoikkuna geo-portal, the National Land Survey worked with what3words to simplify location searching and discovery beyond traditional coordinates.

what3words was integrated into the geo-portal so users could find their own 3 word address, search for places by 3 word address, and identify precise locations without street addresses, such as entrances or rural features. The result was a more accessible mapping experience for everyday use, helping make maps and data easier to understand and use across Finland, with support available in Finnish.
