Case Study: Tropical Health LLP achieves precise household mapping for mosquito net durability monitoring with what3words

3 words to help eliminate Malaria with Tropical Health

what3words worked with Tropical Health LLP on the VectorWorks project (funded by the US President’s Malaria Initiative and led by Johns Hopkins CCP) to monitor the durability of insecticide-treated mosquito nets in Mozambique (with Nigeria to follow). The challenge was accurately documenting household locations for three-year follow-ups and hotspot identification—traditional latitude/longitude coordinates are long, error-prone and hard to use in the field.

what3words provided unique 3-word addresses for 3 m x 3 m squares, allowing teams to map, locate and revisit sampled households reliably. This improved follow-up accuracy, helped the National Malaria Control Programme assess net longevity, enabled users to learn better care practices, guided product improvements, and strengthened efforts to reduce and ultimately eliminate malaria.
