Buffalo Sewer Authority boosts stormwater capacity 90% with Wendel

The Buffalo Sewer Authority faced a challenge with its combined sewer system and sought a sustainable, long-term alternative to traditional management approaches. The vendor, Wendel, was engaged to help identify sites for redesign utilizing green infrastructure to reduce stormwater entering the sewers.

Wendel implemented a green infrastructure solution at the Willert Park project site, which included installing porous asphalt, bioretention rain gardens, and a widened median with plantings. This approach provided a 90% improvement in stormwater storage capacity, which increased treatment plant capacity by eliminating stormwater volume. The project also enhanced community quality of life and earned an Envision Bronze award for sustainable infrastructure.
