Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens expands with Wendel through 90,000 square feet of renovated outdoor gardens

Wendel was engaged by the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens to lead a major expansion of their historic facility. The challenge was to design new spaces that would increase capacity and modernize amenities while preserving the integrity of the original, iconic glasshouse structure and its plant-first legacy.

Using their Immersion™ collaborative workshop process, Wendel designed a sustainable addition featuring a new entrance, classrooms, event spaces, and renovated gardens. The solution focused on energy efficiency with goals exceeding LEED Silver, incorporating solar panels, geothermal heating, and water reclamation systems. This expansion allows the Botanical Gardens to welcome new audiences, serve the whole community, and support sustainable growth for the future.
