MT Suitability Pilot to Shorten Translation Times + Reduce Costs

Trend Micro, a global leader in IT security, needed to shorten translation times and reduce localization costs to keep pace with agile development and higher content volumes. In 2015 Trend Micro engaged Welocalize to run an MT Suitability Pilot (weMT) to evaluate machine translation for technical documentation and UI content in French, German and Simplified Chinese.

Welocalize built and trained two customized MT systems per language (WeMT Moses and a customized Microsoft Translator Hub), then ran automatic scoring, human evaluation and post-editing productivity tests using an MT KPI scorecard. The pilot reduced translation turnaround time and time-to-market by about 15% through post-editing productivity gains, produced post-edited MT quality comparable to human translation, and led Trend Micro to expand MT deployment with Welocalize.
