A Weka Case Study
The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, the world’s oldest collegiate business school, needed a faster, more flexible way to support growing cloud-based research workloads across its HPC3 environment. As projects expanded in size and complexity, Wharton faced complicated cloud data management, NFS-based I/O bottlenecks, and inflexible resource allocation. It turned to Weka and the WEKA Data Platform to better support compute-intensive research in AWS.
With Weka’s cloud-native data platform, Wharton gained an extendable file system that automates data placement between SSD and object storage, improves elasticity, and simplifies administration with policy-driven management and strong command-line and web-based controls. The result was significantly higher throughput to every compute node, better time to solution, and the ability to scale research jobs up or down as needed without paying for idle capacity. Weka also helped eliminate the need for a full-time file system hardware administrator, while enabling researchers to tackle larger, more complex projects and meet publication deadlines more consistently.
