Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics Accelerates Biomedical Research & Discovery with the WEKA® Data Platform

The Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) needed a secure, high-performance storage platform for sensitive biomedical and patient data on its OpenStack-based private cloud. Working with Weka, SIB looked for a file system that could provide encryption in flight and at rest, shared access for authorized users, and strong performance for mixed research workloads without slowing applications.

Weka implemented WekaFS on an on-premises, virtualized 8-node OpenStack cluster, giving SIB isolated multi-tenant file systems, advanced authentication, and encrypted storage across NVMe and Ceph tiers. As a result, SIB was able to expand the number of biomedical research projects it supports, while maintaining secure access and high bandwidth with no performance degradation from encryption.
