Improving Employee Engagement and Becoming An Employer Of Choice

The State of Washington faced the challenge of connecting and supporting the well‑being of a dispersed workforce of over 140,000 employees across 400+ organizations after Governor Jay Inslee issued an executive order to improve employee health and productivity. To meet this mandate, the State engaged WebMD Health Services to deliver a coordinated employee well‑being program, using the SmartHealth online engagement platform.

WebMD Health Services implemented SmartHealth as an online, targeted engagement program with statewide goals, localized challenges by agency, job role and location, leadership support initiatives like the annual Governor’s Walk, and manager-focused interventions for high‑stress groups. The program drove measurable improvements in well‑being and engagement—employees with higher well‑being had 25% lower turnover versus those with low well‑being—representing a potential $16M in turnover savings and stronger employer desirability.
