Carsoup.com, founded in 1998, is an online marketplace for buying new and used vehicles. To monetize the site it sold ad packages to dealers but relied on conventional display units and pop-ups/pop-unders, which were increasingly blocked by ad-blockers and ignored by users—resulting in very low impressions and click-through rates. Seeking a better way to create and manage advertising inventory, Carsoup.com partnered with WebEngage.
WebEngage deployed targeted in-page pop-over overlays (notifications) that bypass ad-blockers and appear based on rules like DMA/geolocation, cookies, device type, traffic source, time of visit and visitor type. Carsoup used these overlays for localized campaigns (for example, an Atlanta-targeted dealer ad) and achieved an average CTR of 4% over a year—versus a 0.12% industry average for automotive ads—about a 33x improvement, while improving relevance and user experience.
