PepsiCo, a major multinational food and beverage corporation, wanted to test if using live weather signals could improve the performance of its digital ads for Lipton Ice Tea on Facebook and Instagram. The challenge was to determine whether different weather conditions would trigger different responses from users, with a focus on increasing awareness and tracking click-through and engagement rates. To achieve this, they partnered with the vendor WeatherAds.
WeatherAds implemented a solution where weather-specific ad creative was paired with real-time weather triggers. This included a 'Sunny Version' ad activated by a sunshine index and a 'Rainy Version' activated by rainfall, which were tested against a control group. The results from WeatherAds showed an increase in click-through rates for the weather-relevant ads. The PepsiCo team gained positive learnings from the experiment, confirming that weather does impact user response, and they are continuing further tests.
