A Wazoku Case Study
SunNight Solar, founded by Mark Bent, set out to bring affordable off-grid lighting to the more than 2 billion people without electricity. After spending over $250,000 and 18 months with limited progress, Bent ran a challenge with InnoCentive to develop a solar-powered flashlight powerful enough to illuminate an entire room while cutting R&D time and cost.
InnoCentive engaged 982 solvers and produced 78 submissions; New Zealand engineer Russell McMahon delivered a winning design that met the specifications and offered a 20-year lifespan. With a $20,000 prize, research-to-prototype time dropped to two months, the dual-purpose “BoGo Light” reached market in under a year, and hundreds of thousands have been distributed across 50+ countries, improving quality of life.
