How the U.S. Government is Conquering Open Innovation

InnoCentive works with the U.S. federal government to tackle hard-to-solve public-sector R&D problems by tapping a global crowd of solvers. Faced with hundreds of agencies, large annual innovation budgets, and the need to ensure tax dollars fund effective solutions rather than costly trial-and-error, agencies needed a reliable way to find targeted ideas and technologies without building a solver network from scratch.

Using its Challenge-Driven Innovation (CDI) approach, InnoCentive designs and runs prize challenges, provides training and IP/compliance support (including America COMPETES and Challenge.gov services), and delivers access to a vetted global and U.S. solver base with masked submissions for fairness. Since 2005 it has run 500+ government challenges (over 2,400 challenges total company-wide), achieving government success rates above 87% and implementation rates over 98% for major clients, and has been used by agencies such as NASA, EPA, DHS, DARPA and the Department of Energy to accelerate solutions more quickly and cost-effectively.
