A Wazoku Case Study
Enemærke & Petersen, one of Denmark’s largest construction firms, partnered with the Danish Crowdsourcing Association, BLOXHUB and Wazoku to tackle the sector’s huge waste problem (the industry generates ~30% of national waste and uses >40% of domestic resources). They launched the Upcycle Challenge on Wazoku’s idea platform to crowdsource ways to reuse and recycle building materials, inviting public and industry participation to rethink construction waste.
Over a six-week period the open innovation contest attracted global engagement and produced 52 ideas; five finalists pitched to an expert panel and the winning entry, Reskur from Krydsrum Architects, proposed building storage sheds from reclaimed tiles, bricks and slate. The idea has been built at Holberg School, won the initial DKK 51,646 prize (≈£6,000) and later a further £120k, and—if scaled—could save about 40,000 tonnes of CO2 per year while driving wider industry awareness and sustainable practice.
