A Wazoku Case Study
Headquartered in Michigan, The Dow Chemical Company introduced a new generation of oil-soluble Polyalkylene Glycols (PAGs) that can be mixed with hydrocarbon and mineral oils and offer unique performance advantages. Dow sought outside expertise to identify new uses and accelerate commercialization across markets beyond the initial industrial and automotive lubricant opportunities.
Through a Solvers challenge, Dow awarded two $15,000 prizes—Joel Martin for a novel pharmaceutical application addressing eye ailments and Dmitriy Tipikin for using oil-soluble PAGs to demulsify oil-in-water emulsions in oil, gas and mining. The program engaged over 313 Solvers and generated about 60 potential solutions, giving Dow greater exposure to end users and uncovering additional commercial opportunities.
