Case Study: Square achieves net zero ambitions with Watershed

Square from zero to net zero in six months

Square, the financial technology company, wanted to rapidly advance its climate strategy beyond its own operations and help accelerate the transition to renewable energy in the broader ecosystem, including bitcoin mining. To do that, Square partnered with Watershed to build a net zero program from scratch and support its sustainability team with carbon audits, strategy, and reporting.

Watershed helped Square operationalize climate action across teams by providing tools and insights for decisions in Hardware, Logistics, and Procurement, including life cycle assessments for lower-carbon product design. With Watershed, Square announced a commitment to reach net zero carbon by 2030 and launched the Bitcoin Clean Energy Investment Initiative, a $10 million effort to drive renewable energy adoption and efficiency in the bitcoin ecosystem.
