MARS Food and Nutrition Leverages Technology to Assess Water Risks of Rice Growing Areas

MARS Food and Nutrition, part of the Mars multinational, wanted to strengthen sustainable sourcing by reducing water-related risk across its supply chain, starting with rice. The company faced the challenge of identifying rice-growing regions with lower water risk exposure and vulnerability while accounting for the complexity of gathering and interpreting global water data. Waterplan’s water risk data and analytics platform supported this effort.

Using Waterplan’s comprehensive global and local water data, Mars Food and Nutrition assessed current and projected water risks across nine states in Pakistan and India in just one month. Waterplan centralized data from multiple sources and helped classify sourcing regions by suitability, enabling Mars to better evaluate long-term sourcing options, monitor future water challenges, and make more informed water sustainability decisions.
