Abertay University secures 5,000-student network with WatchGuard and an 80-gigabyte backbone upgrade

Abertay University, a technologically focused institution, faced the challenge of securing its network for thousands of tech-savvy students and a diverse array of devices while upgrading its infrastructure. They needed a powerful security solution with high throughput that could also isolate its Ethical Hacking Lab and block sophisticated threats. WatchGuard firewalls were selected to meet these complex requirements.

The solution implemented two WatchGuard 2520 firewalls and an XTM 330 device, which provided application filtering, malware detection, and web blocking without impacting traffic speed. WatchGuard delivered a full layer 7 scanning platform that consolidated multiple security features into a single unit. The results included greater network visibility through WatchGuard's Dimension data logging system, improved fault-finding, and the successful containment of the Ethical Hacking Lab.
