A WasteWORKS Case Study
West Yellowstone Compost Facility, part of the West Yellowstone–Hebgen Basin transfer station bordering Yellowstone National Park, faced a seasonal surge of visitor-generated trash in a remote location where hauling waste 120 miles to the nearest landfill was costly and impractical. The site also had to manage wildlife interactions and needed better operational controls to reduce landfill shipments and streamline administration.
The facility installed a sorting and composting system—separating compostables, mixing them with wood chips and manure, and using monitored, aerated composting tunnels followed by curing and screening—so finished compost can be used by the park or sold. As a new WasteWORKS customer, the site also implemented software for customer accounts, billing and reporting, enabling tighter tracking of materials in and compost out, reduced hauling to Logan landfill, and more efficient financial and operational management.
