A WasteWORKS Case Study
St. Lucie County Solid Waste and Recycling Facility, serving a rapidly growing Florida county, processes about 550 transactions per day (roughly 2,000 tons) and faced mounting pressure on landfill capacity from population growth and hurricane-related construction and demolition debris. The challenge was to conserve scarce landfill space, manage large C&D volumes, and find productive uses for landfill methane while maintaining efficient operations.
The county answered with an on-site C&D processing facility that diverts nearly 80% of C&D materials, bales solid waste to maximize cell capacity and reduce daily cover needs, and operates an award-winning gas-to-energy system that supplies methane to a neighboring Tropicana plant. Recent upgrades—including new scales and WasteWIZARD automation for an express lane—improved throughput and staff efficiency, positioning the facility as a model for resource recovery and long-term landfill conservation.
