Mecklenburg County - Customer Case Study

Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Services in Charlotte, NC — a long-time WasteWORKS customer since 1995 — operates the ISO14001-certified Foxhole Landfill, three full-service recycling centers and a large composting yard (Compost Central received about 66,000 tons in 2012). Facing facility renovations and heavy seasonal demand (up to 500 tons/day during “Leaf Season”), the county needed better real-time data sharing across four sites, faster reporting, improved customer account tracking, and a way to reduce scale-line backups that were causing traffic and safety issues.

To address this, Mecklenburg upgraded to WasteWORKS-SQL and added a WasteWIZARD at Compost Central’s second scale. The SQL upgrade delivered near real-time information, immediate account and vehicle updates, and quicker reports, while the WasteWIZARD cut wait times, sped up city truck turnarounds, allowed two scales to be run with one cashier, freed a scale for smaller customers, and improved overall safety and efficiency—supporting the county’s “Wipe Out Waste” goals.
