Putting the “Service” Back in Service Station Reconstruction

S.M. Miller Construction Company, a general contractor in Grove City, Ohio, was demolishing an old BP service station near downtown Columbus to make way for a modern service station and mini-mart. During the project, the company needed to quickly remove two 30-year-old underground storage tanks that had contained gasoline and were classified as special waste, but the original waste hauler could not provide the necessary equipment for another four to five days, threatening to halt construction.

Waste Management responded to S.M. Miller Construction Company’s emergency call by sending a crew the next morning with the right equipment to remove the crushed tanks and transport them to a nearby Subtitle “C” landfill. Waste Management completed the disposal in accordance with environmental regulations, helping the reconstruction continue safely and on schedule, while avoiding a multi-day delay in the project.
