Norwegian Cruise Line - Customer Case Study

Norwegian Cruise Line needed a more efficient way to manage the growing waste and recycling demands of its ships in the Port of Miami, especially the much larger Norwegian Epic. Waste Management provided its “Live Load” service model to help handle the cruise line’s solid waste stream while improving collection efficiency and supporting expanded recycling.

Waste Management implemented a dockside, just-in-time pickup process using a side-curtain semi-trailer to transport sorted materials from ship to facility. The solution enabled recycling of glass, cardboard, paper, plastic, aluminum, steel and e-waste, sent dry waste to waste-to-energy, and eliminated landfilling of the ship’s waste. It also improved port security and operations, delivered measurable cost savings, and was successfully expanded to additional ports including Boston, Canaveral and Tampa.
