A Wasp Barcode Technologies Case Study
The University of Iowa EMS Student Interest Organization (UIEMSSIO) is a 100-member student volunteer group of certified EMTs that provides emergency care, first-aid training and outreach on campus. As the organization grew, tracking disposable supplies (gauze, oxygen masks, training lungs) and reusable assets (mannequins, computers) became time-consuming and error-prone; budget limits ruled out common EMS systems and the group needed an affordable, all‑in‑one solution that required minimal training.
UIEMSSIO implemented Wasp inventory and asset management software, using mobile computers at multiple storage locations to automatically log usage to a central system. The change eliminated manual entry, improved accountability by tracking who checks out items, their condition and maintenance schedules (including expirations), and saved the team roughly eight hours a month — while providing a professional tool that enhances student training.
