Academic Genomic Research with Wasabi + Equinix Metal

Equinix Metal supported a collaborative academic genomics research team led by Dr. Emilyn Costa Conceição, which was studying tuberculosis molecular epidemiology, phylogeny, and genetic diversity. With a very limited self-funded budget, the team needed to work with multi-terabyte datasets and distributed researchers across several countries, but first-generation cloud costs, local storage limits, and slow file transfers made the research difficult and expensive.

Using Wasabi Technologies’ hot cloud storage together with Equinix Metal bare metal compute, plus open source tools like rclone and Bioconda, the team built a faster and more affordable research workflow. Wasabi Technologies helped keep storage costs predictable and low while Equinix Metal delivered high-performance compute and fast cloud connectivity, enabling parallel collaboration and dramatically speeding up data movement and analysis.
