A Wärtsilä Energy Case Study
Valkeakosken Energia, an energy company owned by the city of Valkeakoski, faced the challenge of ensuring competitive electricity and district heating prices for its citizens following the deregulation of the Finnish electricity market. To proactively participate in this new market, the customer sought to invest in its own combined heat and power (CHP) production and selected Wärtsilä Energy to provide a solution.
Wärtsilä Energy implemented a turnkey CHP plant, providing engineering, procurement, and construction services. The solution consisted of two Wärtsilä 18V34SG engines, delivering 12 MW of electrical output and 13 MW of heat for the district heating network. This plant, which was remote-controlled and unmanned, produced enough electricity annually to heat approximately 3000 private houses, ensuring competitive energy prices for the city.
