United Ashuganj delivers 200 MW at >47% thermal efficiency with Wärtsilä Energy

The customer, United Ashuganj Energy Ltd., faced the challenge of Bangladesh's chronic power constraints due to outdated, inefficient infrastructure and an erratic grid load. Partnering with Wärtsilä Energy through a public-private partnership, they sought a highly efficient and flexible power generation solution to replace old gas-guzzling plants.

Wärtsilä Energy implemented a solution using 20 of their 20V34SG gas engines in a modular, co-generation plant. This design used exhaust heat to power additional turbines, achieving a thermal efficiency exceeding 47% and adding 16 MW of output without extra fuel. The compact plant fit within a limited site and provided the grid with unprecedented flexibility to quickly ramp production up or down while maintaining efficiency, serving as a new model for the country's power sector.
