Tyr Energy boosts grid stability with Wärtsilä Energy's 231 MW peaking plant

Tyr Energy Inc., a subsidiary of ITOCHU Corporation, faced the challenge of ensuring grid stability in Colorado, USA, where fluctuating output from wind generation and harsh high-altitude, hot climate conditions required a highly flexible and reliable power source. To optimize their return on investment, they needed a solution that could provide rapid response to sudden load swings while stabilizing emissions. They turned to Wärtsilä Energy and its Wärtsilä 34SG gas engines for the Plains End I & II power plant.

Wärtsilä Energy implemented a solution using 20 of its 18V34SG and 14 of its 20V34SG engines, creating the world's largest natural gas-fired peaking plant with reciprocating engines. A key part of the solution was upgrading the engines with Wärtsilä’s 0.9% pre-chamber technology, which optimized combustion. This resulted in a total output of 231 MW, superb operational flexibility, and a 25% reduction in urea consumption for the SCR system, providing significant cost savings and stable emissions.
