Swb Erzeugung cuts CO2 emissions by 75% with Wärtsilä Energy

The customer, swb Erzeugung, faced the challenge of phasing out an outdated coal-fired power plant in Bremen, Germany. They needed a flexible and environmentally friendly solution to provide combined heat and power, ensure performance, and respond quickly to volatile electricity markets. To address this, they partnered with vendor Wärtsilä Energy to implement a new flexible CHP plant.

Wärtsilä Energy's solution was a 105 MW gas engine power plant featuring nine Wärtsilä 31SG generating sets and a heat recovery system, delivered under an EPC contract. The plant provides both electricity and district heating with high efficiency and operational flexibility. This resulted in a 75% reduction in the customer's CO2 emissions, equating to approximately 550,000 tons per year. The project also included a guaranteed asset performance agreement from Wärtsilä to optimize maintenance and ensure long-term reliability.
