Case Study: SSEN achieves a balanced, more reliable Shetland grid with Wärtsilä Energy Storage

A Wärtsilä Energy Case Study

Preview of the SSEN (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Distribution) Case Study

SSEN balances the Shetland grid with Wärtsilä’s 8 MW / 6 MWh BESS

The customer, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Distribution (SSEN), faced the challenge of ensuring a reliable and balanced electricity supply for the Shetland Islands' isolated grid. Their goals were to upgrade the existing infrastructure, reduce the operating hours of diesel generators, and increase the integration of renewable wind power. Wärtsilä Energy provided a solution using its battery energy storage system (BESS) and GEMS Digital Energy Platform.

Wärtsilä Energy implemented an 8 MW / 6 MWh energy storage system to modernize the grid. This solution provided instant backup power, enhanced security of supply, and allowed for greater optimization of wind energy. The results included improved utilization of renewable power, reduced fuel costs and CO2 emissions, and increased stability for the island's energy infrastructure.
