A Wärtsilä Energy Case Study

Preview of the SSE Renewables Case Study

SSE Renewables delivers 50 MW / 100 MWh battery storage with Wärtsilä

The customer, SSE Renewables, a major UK utility, faced the challenge of maintaining grid stability and facilitating wholesale market trading as fossil fuels were phased out, all while working to meet ambitious sustainability goals. To address this, they partnered with vendor Wärtsilä Energy to implement a large-scale energy storage solution.

Wärtsilä Energy delivered a 50 MW / 100 MWh energy storage system utilizing their Quantum BESS and GEMS Digital Energy Platform. This solution provides instantaneous frequency regulation, enhances grid stability, and enables more consumers to access secure, low-cost renewable energy. The system, which can power approximately 80,000 homes according to SSE's calculation, is a key step in unlocking the UK's path towards net zero.
