Sampol ensures reliable backup power at Barajas Airport with Wärtsilä Energy’s 33 MW plant

Sampol required a highly reliable and efficient backup power generation and combined heat and cooling solution for the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. The challenge was to ensure always-available power to prevent blackouts, supported by long-term maintenance. Wärtsilä Energy provided the solution with a 33 MW power plant utilizing Wärtsilä 18V32DF dual-fuel engines.

The solution implemented by Wärtsilä Energy included a long-term service agreement with on-site advisory support. This partnership resulted in over 110,000 running hours per engine with no major issues, consistently high availability, and performance that matched or exceeded efficiency targets, leading to four renewals of the maintenance agreement.
