Pacific Gas & Electric Company boosts Humboldt Bay power output 33% with Wärtsilä Energy

Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) needed to replace two 50-year-old gas turbine units at its Humboldt Bay site to meet California's stringent environmental regulations. The challenge was to achieve a more efficient and reliable power supply with significantly lower emissions. Wärtsilä Energy provided a solution using its 50DF multi-fuel engine technology.

Wärtsilä delivered a 163 MW plant consisting of ten Wärtsilä 18V50DF dual-fuel engines on an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) basis. The solution resulted in a plant that is 33% more efficient, produces 85% fewer ozone-forming compounds, and achieves a 34% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. The Wärtsilä facility now reliably powers approximately 125,000 homes.
