Origin Energy delivers 700 MW / 3.16 GWh battery storage with Wärtsilä Energy

Origin Energy, an Australian energy company, faced the challenge of ensuring grid stability and reliability as coal-fired generation was phased out and replaced with intermittent renewable energy sources. They partnered with vendor Wärtsilä to deploy a massive battery energy storage system (BESS) using Wärtsilä's GridSolve Quantum systems and GEMS software platform.

Wärtsilä implemented a multi-stage 700 MW / 3,160 MWh energy storage system, the largest in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. The solution provides critical grid services, enabling the extended dispatch of stored energy to support renewables. The completed system powers approximately 150,000 households annually and provides the firming capacity needed to support the retirement of Australia's largest coal plant.
