NiuPower boosts Port Moresby grid reliability with Wärtsilä’s 58.74 MW plant and 25.6M€ annual savings

NiuPower Limited, an independent power producer in Papua New Guinea, faced a dependence on expensive imported diesel fuel and a need for a more stable, affordable, and lower-emission power supply. To address this challenge, they partnered with Wärtsilä Energy.

Wärtsilä Energy implemented a 58.74 MW natural gas power plant running on six Wärtsilä 34SG engines and entered into a 15-year operations and maintenance agreement. The results were significant, including annual savings of approximately €25.6 million, a dispatch compliance rate of 99%, and plant availability above 95%. The solution provided approximately 29% of the Port Moresby grid's installed capacity, reducing emissions and enhancing grid stability.
