Matanuska Electric Association powers 100K households with Wärtsilä

Matanuska Electric Association (MEA), a utility cooperative based in Palmer, Alaska, faced the challenge of providing reliable, efficient power to the growing Railbelt grid amidst extreme weather conditions, huge load swings, and strict air quality permits. To prevent blackouts and reduce energy costs, MEA partnered with Wärtsilä Energy to build a new flexible baseload power plant.

Wärtsilä implemented a solution using ten Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines, which maintain high efficiency across the entire load range and can switch fuels seamlessly during operation. The plant also utilizes a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to meet strict emissions requirements. The result is the 171 MW Eklutna Generation Station, which provides stable power for over 100,000 households and is the grid's most important source for maintaining voltage and frequency stability.
