A Wärtsilä Energy Case Study
The Marquette Board of Light and Power (MBLP), a utility serving northern Michigan, faced the challenge of ensuring a reliable energy supply in an extreme cold climate while preparing for upcoming carbon regulations. To address aging coal units and enable more renewable energy, the customer opted for a Wärtsilä Energy flexible power generation solution.
Wärtsilä implemented a 50 MW power plant utilizing three 18V50DF dual-fuel engines. This solution provides highly reliable, efficient, and flexible power, capable of reaching full load in five minutes and running on natural gas with light fuel oil as a backup. The plant secures power for approximately 17,000 households, prevents blackouts, and helps MBLP meet emission requirements.
