Case Study: Ittehad Chemicals achieves reliable, efficient power with Wärtsilä Energy upgrades

A Wärtsilä Energy Case Study

Preview of the Ittehad Chemicals Limited (icl) Case Study

Ittehad Chemicals boosts power output by 20% with Wärtsilä Energy

Ittehad Chemicals Limited (ICL), a major chemical manufacturer in Pakistan, faced significant production challenges due to the inability to synchronize its 30 MW, 60 Hz Wärtsilä power plant with the 50 Hz national grid. This forced a complete shutdown of their chemical processes twice weekly during natural gas curtailments. ICL needed a solution to enable smooth switching between power sources and to upgrade its obsolete control system to ensure reliable and efficient operation.

Wärtsilä implemented a frequency conversion and a subsequent Power & Efficiency upgrade for ICL's five Wärtsilä 34SG engines. The solution involved replacing alternators, upgrading to the UNIC control system, and installing a new load management system. This allowed the plant to synchronize with the grid and increased its output by 20%. The upgrades resulted in operational cost savings, power availability increased to over 95%, and eliminated production-disrupting shutdowns for ICL.
