ContourGlobal Bonaire boosts renewable integration with Wärtsilä’s 6 MW/6 MWh storage system

The customer, ContourGlobal Bonaire, faced the challenge of ensuring energy reliability and integrating renewable generation on the Caribbean island of Bonaire. They needed to replace outdated thermal technology, curtail wind resources, and prepare for peak tourist demand. They partnered with vendor Wärtsilä Energy to utilize their GEMS energy management platform and storage solutions.

Wärtsilä implemented a hybrid solution that optimized thermal, wind, and new storage assets, including a 6 MW/6 MWh energy storage system. This approach nearly doubled renewable energy penetration, reduced CO2 emissions by 8%, and cut fossil fuel consumption by 5%. The GEMS platform used artificial intelligence to intelligently synchronize all power assets, eliminating issues with renewable intermittency and maintaining grid reliability.
