Preview of the Colbún Case Study

Colbún deploys 8 MW / 32 MWh storage with Wärtsilä Energy

Colbún, one of the largest power generation companies in Chile, faced the challenge of accelerating its decarbonization and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. This required integrating a new 230 MWp solar facility and providing grid stability as the country decommissioned coal plants. Wärtsilä Energy provided a solution using its battery energy storage system and GEMS Digital Energy Platform.

The solution implemented by Wärtsilä was an 8 MW / 32 MWh energy storage system co-located with the solar plant. This solar-plus-storage facility, optimized by Wärtsilä's GEMS platform, provided greater flexibility, prevented solar energy curtailment, and ensured a reliable energy supply during peak periods for approximately 80,000 households.
